Joe’s gardens

“Cultivating flavor while honoring tradition and our community”

Joe and Ann Bertero established Joe’s Gardens in the 1920’s, moving it to our current location in 1933. At the time, there were several truck farms in the area, trucking their produce from the garden to local markets and grocery stores. Today, Joe’s Gardens is one of the original remaining truck farms in the Northwest, harvesting our produce fresh and selling it to our community from our stand located at the farm.

In 1983, Carl and Karol Weston and their sons, Nathan and Jason, took over operations of the farm. Carl was fulfilling a life-long dream of running Joe’s Gardens; he had begun work along side Joe in 1959. Upon assuming ownership, Carl made a conscious decision to free the soil of pesticides and to grow crops pesticide free; products at Joe’s Gardens have been grown this way for 25 years, and counting.  We believe that quality and flavor are more important than shelf life - buy fresh, buy often!

In 2007, Karol and Carl passed operations onto their sons, Jason and Nathan. The family works side by side, as Nathan and Jason inherit the same traditions passed on by Joe and Ann Bertero. Not many things have changed at Joe’s Gardens over the years. We still believe in growing quality products that are affordable to all. A visit to Joe’s Gardens will be an experience that you and your taste buds will not soon forget. Visit often to enjoy all the flavors and flowers that Spring, Summer and Fall have to offer.

About Joe’s Gardens

Products and Seasons

Joe’s Garden is located in Bellingham, Washington and has been offering quality fruits and vegetables since 1933. At Joe’s, our products vary with the seasons, everything picked at it’s peak of ripeness and flavor.

Our doors open in early March, when you can expect to find bedding plants, the finest vegetable starts, as well as potting soil and compost to make your garden beautiful and bountiful. All plants have been selected for their flavor and hardiness in the Northwest climate.

Mid-May brings beautiful hanging baskets and the start of vegetable harvesting. You are sure to find fresh lettuce, salad greens, radishes, green onions, baby potatoes and carrots.

Summer adds the beauty of freshly tied bouquets, along with the unbelievable sweetness of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. You can also enjoy onion varieties, cabbage, swiss chard, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, cucumbers, tomatoes, fresh herbs, corn and our famous shelling and sugar snap peas - get extra for the ride home!

Fall unveils garlic in beautiful braids that we hand tie, or by the bulb. Our garlic is grown using seed that Joe Bertero brought to Bellingham from his family in Genoa, Italy; it has an amazing flavor that is sure to enhance your favorite dishes. Fall also adds shallots, apples, pumpkins and Fall squash varieties to the extensive list of fresh fruits and vegetables still on the menu from Spring and Summer.

Other products include locally baked bread from Avenue Bread that is brought in fresh daily, local jams, syrups, spices and oils.

You never know what you will find from day to day throughout the season, but you can always count on quality and freshness and a hand out to your car.
